Women’s Ballon d’Or: Manchester City’s Lauren Hemp and Khadija Shaw on ‘dream’ nominations

Shaw finished as top scorer in the extreme Women’s Super League season, but Manchester Town missed the call for an extra goal.

She was also named PFA Presen Women’s Player and FWA Presen Women’s Footballer.

“She’s a fox in the box,” Hemp stated. “In the seasons I’ve played with her, she’s come out on top and always finishes as top scorer. It’s great to have her on the team.”

Shaw said any of his team-mates would have been nominated that year for Town, although he did not hand out any trophies.

“Many players from our team could be on that list,” added the 27-year-old. “The overall effort we put in every day not only to score goals but also to improve.

“I’m hardened to Hemp. If she offers me an unholy pass, I’ll be all over her. If I don’t qualify, she’ll do the same.

“She’s a hard worker and buzzes around the field. She’s an unbelievable player. I just know that when she’s out there, I have to be ready.”

“I love playing with her. I experience it every time. The sky is the limit for Hempo.”

Hemp said it usually takes her “a long time” to process her achievements, but she has already realized the importance of being nominated for the Ballon d’Or.

“We are surrounded by fantastic players week after week,” he added. “This directly pushes us to be much higher.

“I’m very proud to be a grafter, as Shaw says, and to give it my all every time I put that shirt on.

“If everyone is playing well, it makes me feel like I’m playing well too. It’s a really proud performance.”
