Popular video game adaptations in films have increased in frequency in recent years. The eagerly anticipated live-action Minecraft movie is one such adaptation that has been in development for close to ten years.
Fans of the well-known video game can now eagerly anticipate the debut of the live-action Minecraft movie after years of setbacks and delays. According to Deadline, Minecraft Movie is based on the all-time best-selling video game It will be released on April 4, 2025.
Jared Hess, best known for his work on movies like Nacho Libre and Napoleon Dynamite will be the film’s director. Jason Momoa well-known for his roles in Game of Thrones and Aquaman, will play the lead role.
The creation of the Minecraft movies has been a long and winding road. First confirmed in 2014, the project has faced numerous setbacks and changes in direction over the years. The movie was originally set to be directed by Shawn Levy, but he dropped out in 2014. He was then replaced by Rob McElhenney in 2015, with Steve Carell set to star and a release date of May 24, 2019.
However, McElhenney also left the project in 2018, and Peter Sollett was brought on board to direct the film and rewrite the script from scratch. The film’s release date was then pushed back to March 4, 2022. Unfortunately, Sollett also dropped out in 2022, which led to yet another change in direction for the movie.
“It turns out that making a live-action, full-length feature film is really complicated”, Mojang said in a blog post back in 2019 when Sollett was confirmed to be taking over. Despite the challenges, fans of the video game have remained eager for the movie’s release.
While fans wait for the release of the Minecraft movie, they can enjoy the upcoming action strategy spin-off game, Minecraft Legends. On April 16, the game—which was co-created by Mojang and Blackbird Interactive—will be made available for PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. It will also support cross-platform play and online matchmaking.
