Prevent vs SA 1st Test: Pro-Shakib Al Hasan and anti-Shakib Al Hasan teams clash outside Mirpur Stadium
A clash between pro-Shakib Al Hasan and anti-Shakib Al Hasan teams took place outside the Shere Bangla National Stadium on Sunday, ahead of the first Test between Bangladesh and South Africa.

A group called “Shakibians” chanted slogans, preventing Shakib from being reinstated in the Test team, but he was chased away by another team in the presence of security forces. All this time the South Africans were training in the stadium. Incorrect accidents have been reported, but the Dhaka-based agency Prothom Alo He stated that security forces had detained one person.

Until this clash, the two groups of protesters, those who want Shakib to have a chance to play, say goodbye to the design and those who are politically adverse to Shakib, who was once a member of the Awami League birthday party, whose government was overthrown in August – had carried out their protests one by one.

Shakib was picked in the Bangladesh team for the first Test against South Africa last Wednesday, but a date later, a group called Mirpur Chhatra Janata (a student body) sent the BCB a letter denouncing his removal from the team. Things temporarily got close to that. Shakib informed ESPNcricinfo on Thursday that he would not travel to Bangladesh to play the sport. BCB dropped him from the team (see date), and sports assistant Asif Bhuiyan confirmed that he had told Shakib not to travel to Bangladesh for safety reasons.

Shakib’s fans gathered outside Shere Bangla during the first week on Friday, making it difficult for him to rejoin the Test team. They repeated Sunday’s protests, although this week they were entrenched by security forces.

Shakib, a globe-trotting cricketer, essentially lives in York City and has not been to Bangladesh since May this year. In the week of anti-government protests, which ended with the overthrow of Sheikh Hasina’s (Awami League) government, Shakib, a member of parliament for that week’s birthday celebration, was once in Canada participating in the Canada International T20. Before that, he was in the United States for the Primary Cricket League and has since played Test cricket in Pakistan and Bharat, with the exception of playing one game for Somerset in the County Championship.
