Australia News: Pat Cummins Josh Hazlewood included for Champions Trophy

Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood have been named in Australia’s Champions Trophy squad after being ruled out of the upcoming Test tour of Sri Lanka.

Cummins, who will captain the team, is on paternity leave for the birth of his second child, but last week it was also revealed that he was due to undergo scans on a problematic ankle he carried during the India Test series. George Bailey, chairman of selectors, said they were awaiting the result of scans, but with the ability to freely modify the squad over the next four weeks, there was no imminent rush to make a final decision.

Hazlewood, meanwhile, had not recovered in time from the calf injury that ended his series but should be able to take his place in the one-day squad.

Hardie is currently not bowling for Perth Scorchers in the BBL due to injury, while Josh Inglis is also recovering from a calf strain he suffered while playing as a substitute during the Test series.

Nathan Ellis has tipped the likes of Sean Abbott and Xavier Bartlett to be the fourth bowler behind the big three.

“This is a balanced and experienced team, the core of which featured in the previous One-Day World Cup, the West Indies series, last year’s successful tour of the United Kingdom and the most recent home series to Pakistan,” Bailey said. “It offers a variety of options for tour management depending on the opposition and conditions that may arise in Pakistan.”

Alex Carey also finds a place after successfully returning to the ODI team against England last year with scores of 74 and 77, without having previously lost his place after a 2023 World Cup game. He could play as a specialist batsman, as he he did once in the England series, but also provides back-up for Inglis.

Adam Zampa is the only frontline player, but he will be supported by Short and Glenn Maxwell.

Among the younger players to play against Pakistan earlier in the series, where Australia lost 2-1, Jake Fraser-McGurk missed the cut amid a long, lean spell that included a top score of 26 in eight innings for Melbourne Renegades . Cooper Connolly, who was selected for the Test tour of Sri Lanka, also finds no room.

Australia will play a one-off ODI against Sri Lanka on February 13 before traveling to Pakistan and discussions continue over whether there will be another warm-up match. They are grouped with England (February 22), South Africa (February 25) and Afghanistan (February 28).

The first semi-final will take place in Dubai on March 4 and the second in Lahore on March 5 after confirmation of the hybrid model due to India not traveling to Pakistan. The final will be on March 9 in Dubai or Lahore, depending on whether India qualifies.
