Shadow of the Colossus movie ‘not abandoned by any means’

The director linked to a Shadow of the Colossus film adaptation for more than a decade has said the project could still see the light of day.

Sony first announced its plans to bring Team Ico’s celebrated PS2 game to the big screen back in 2009.

But little has been heard about the project in the years since Andrés Muschietti (It, The Flash, Mama) was confirmed to direct it in 2014.

However, Muschietti recently provided a positive update on the film in an interview with an Argentine radio station.

“The film has been in development for 10 years and now the possibility of making it opens up,” he told Radio TU, according to Recambios (translated by El Gamer).

Muschietti stated that it was not “an abandoned project by any means” and added: “I love that movie, there is a script that I really like.”

However, he acknowledged that achieving the desired budget for the project remained an obstacle.

“There are factors that have nothing to do with your hobby and your desire to do it, but rather with how popular an intellectual property like this is,” he said.

“Shadow of the Colossus is a cult game, but to make a good movie there is a studio that puts the numbers and says how much it costs to give the director 200, 150 or 100 million dollars. “There are different versions of the film and obviously I want them to give me 200 million, but that is another factor to take into account.”

Sony this week announced two new movies based on popular PlayStation games. During the company’s CES 2025 press conference on Monday, it was revealed that movies based on Helldivers and Horizon: Zero Dawn are coming.
