Bandai Namco’s shuttered MMORPG project Blue Protocol has been expanded with a new lifeline, courtesy of Tencent-funded developer Bokura.
In late August, Bandai Namco announced plans to shut down the servers for its anime MMORPG Blue Protocol in Japan and completely canceled its release in the West, stating that “it will not be possible to offer a service that satisfies everyone.”
Now, however, Blue Protocol has been reincarnated as Star Resonance, and some of its original development team has joined the new one in Bokura. Although it is set in the same world as Blue Protocol, Regnas, the team said that Star Resonance players can expect reworked gameplay and story.
And it seems that Bokura has also gotten to work. A closed beta test is already planned for players on Android devices and PC, although unfortunately, for now it is only open to Chinese players.
As of now, there is no firm release date in China, Japan or beyond. Blue Protocol servers will stop working on January 18, 2025 (thanks, Automaton).
Ed cut his teeth on Blue Protocol last year, which was set to follow games like Lost Ark and New World as Amazon Games’ next big MMO. However, he was concerned about whether the game could differentiate itself from its main competitors.
