Croatian defender Josko Gvardiol cost £77m when he joined City from RB Leipzig in August 2023.
He struggled in the 4-0 home defeat to Tottenham at the weekend and was responsible for Feyenoord’s first and second goals on Tuesday.
Gvardiol horribly botched a back pass which allowed Anis Hadj Moussa to come in and round Ederson to score Feyenoord’s first goal.
Normally that would have been a mere consolation and City would have sealed the game, but Gvardiol had another forgettable moment eight minutes from time.
He gave the ball away again and Feyenoord attacked. The ball entered the area and Jordan Lotomba fired a shot that brushed the post and deflected towards the goal, where substitute Santiago Giménez chested it in.
“It was a comical defensive mistake by Josko Gvardiol that allowed Feyenoord to get back into the game and they capitulated,” former England winger Andros Townsend told BBC Radio 5 Live.
“We have never seen defensive weaknesses like this from Manchester City before. It seems to be showing up in every game they have played recently.
“They were just sailing. In the end, all that hard City work was undone, and the pressure now mounts even more ahead of the Premier League game against Liverpool.”
Former Manchester City player Gaël Clichy said Guardiola’s team is missing a “vocal” leader in the team.
“You can’t keep making individual mistakes,” Clichy told Amazon Prime.
“That’s happened in the last six games. They’re missing a vocal leader. A strong leader on defense.”
Guardiola added: “Gvardiol will learn. He was the best player on the field, but I will be wrong if I point out anything specific to him.
“He is a fantastic player, a fantastic boy and more than ever we have to help him.”
