UEFA has opened an investigation after Manchester City striker Khadija Shaw was hit by an object during the Women’s Champions League victory against Hammarby.
Shaw scored either side of half-time as City won 2-1 at the Stockholm Arena on Thursday, securing their place in the quarter-finals with two group stage games still to play.
The Jamaican striker’s lively celebration in front of the home fans after her first goal saw her booked, and replays also showed an object apparently being thrown at her from the stands.
“Proceedings have been opened against Hammarby IF for throwing objects (article 16(2)(b) of the Disciplinary Regulations),” UEFA said in a statement.
He added: “Manchester City player Khadija Shaw received a yellow card following her goal submission for unsportsmanlike conduct.”
After the match, City captain Alex Greenwood criticized match broadcaster DAZN for not mentioning the incident in a social media post.
The publication in X, external He said Shaw “confronted” the home fans and received a “stick” from them.
Greenwood responded: “Correction. He travels to Stockholm, scores a great goal. He celebrates his goal. Objects are thrown at him.”
“We have been made aware of media reports regarding an object thrown from the stands during the match between Hammarby IF and Manchester City,” the Swedish team said when approached by BBC Sport for comment.
“We have no further information about the case and we will wait for UEFA’s official investigation.”
