If you’re a fan of carrying your Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 mod with you when you enter online matches, here’s some bad news. Developer Saber Intercative has announced that it will ban them from public sessions starting in December, due to some technical issues that affect even non-modders.
This upcoming change was announced via a nice Steam post written by Space Marine 2 game director Dmitriy Grigorenko, who began by making it clear that the game‘s developers are certainly not anti-mod.

“We wanted to create a game that was moddable from the beginning (that’s why our game package files are not encrypted, for example),” he wrote, “It’s always a pleasure for me, as a developer, to see what our community”. The mods you can create are great and will definitely add to the longevity of this game.
“However, we as developers must also ensure game stability and continually work towards a smoother experience for all players. Our data shows that a non-negligible number of recent server stability issues are related to mods, and that instability affects even those users who do not have mods installed. We have also received reports from users that their save files were corrupted after playing alongside players with mods.
So because of that, the game‘s next big update in December will make it so you won’t be able to access public online sessions if you’re playing with mods installed. That said, Saber made it clear that Private Ops lobbies will still allow mods, and Eternal War custom lobbies are set to do the same once they’ve been added.
Basically, the goal seems to be to allow modders to use mods online when they’re just with their modding partners, but make sure it doesn’t impact the experience of non-modders that those modders might encounter in public sessions. Nice. In theory, everyone should be happy.
It’s almost inevitable that they won’t be, because this happens in a video game, but we can dream, right?
Anyway, Grigorenko also added: “We will also provide an easy entry point to our backend for games with mods installed, so that modders don’t have to waste time hacking the game executable after each patch. If we somehow break this channel for mods by accident in the future, we will fix it. On top of that, we will release some of our tools to modders so they can develop mods more easily.”
So that’s all good, since it will make Space Modrines’ life less complicated, even if they won’t be able to go out in public. Now, get back to those intimate sessions with your siblings.
