“To be brutally honest, we come across this sort of thing every week,” says Kevin Yuan, a London-based video content creator for the Premier League.
It’s not just high-profile players who face racist abuse – fans have told BBC Sport of their experiences after football.
Yuan was racially abused along with a female colleague outside Wembley Stadium by Real Madrid fans after the Champions League final in June.
Yuan creates football content for the Chinese media market and was filming with Madrid fans who, unbeknownst to him, were singing a racially offensive chant in Spanish about Chinese women, directed at his colleague.
“I asked a fan what that song meant. And he told me, that’s a Real Madrid song, that we are champions,” he said.
“The next day, our friends in Spain told us that it was actually a very racist song. We found it incredibly offensive.”
Yuan revealed that he has faced similar incidents filming in English clubs.
“It feels like part of our job. [to take the abuse]” he said. “We filmed at different stadiums before and after the game and it seems to happen literally every week.
“I don’t know if it’s because of the way I look or speak.
“I’m in a group chat with Chinese Manchester United fans and we have a saying: you’ll be very lucky if you avoid a racist incident at least once during a season.
“This happens no matter which team you support. I came to the UK in 2008 and have attended matches since then, but I feel like a foreigner, like I don’t fit in. I hope people understand how disturbing it is and get in touch. my place.”
